Last weekend worked the CQ WPX CW Contest. During the contest, I clearly noticed that the sunspot numbers are on the decline. The last peak was in October 2024. I was only able to make a single contact with North America, and I didn’t make any contacts with South America at all. See also the QSO map below.

Here are the QSO´s I’ve made:

Band QSOs Pts WPX
1,8 5 8 5
3,5 5 8 4
7 2 4 2
14 20 34 19
21 17 33 14
28 11 11 11

Total 60 98 55

Score : 5.390

I still have trouble to work on the 40 meter band.

Here as usual the map shoing the QSO

The map was created with https://qsomap.cqgma.org/ADIF_to_Karte.php and the text was translated with Deepl. DeepL translates the text much better than I could, even though I like to think I have a pretty good command of English.

As I mentioned in the article about the CQ WPX Contest, I’ve been using a new PC since March 2026.

As I mentioned in the article about the CQ WPX Contest, I’ve been using a new PC since March 2026. The old PC was over 14 years old and sometimes took nearly 30 minutes to boot up. Plus, it was no longer compatible with Windows 11.

Unlike the off-the-shelf PC I had used before, this time I decided to have a PC built to my specifications. I’m quite pleased with the result.

Here are a few key facts:.

PC:

Motherboard: MSI A520M Pro

AMD Ryzen 5 processor 3.6 GHz with 6 cores and 16 MB cache.

Memory: Crucial DDR4 with 8 GB Speed 3200MHz

HDD: WD Green SSD 500 GByte

Running Programs:

OS: Windows 11

Communication with my TRX using microham Microkeyer II driven with USB Device Router from Microham

Hamradio Programs:

N1MM+ Contest logger

Ham Radio Deluxe for logging outside the contests

WSJT-X for FT 4 and FT8 in combination with Gridtracker 2

ADIF Master to manage the ADIf communication between WSJT-x and Hamradio Deluxe

What is missing till now is a programm for SSTV. On the old computeri used MM SSTV but haven’t decided yet which program I’ll use on my new PC for receiving (and maybe Transmitting) SSTV.

I’m sure a few more programs will follow.

Just like two years ago, I decided to go to Kassel for the Funktag (Radio Day), even though it meant getting up at 6 a.m. to be at the bus stop on time at 7. But since it’s quite a distance from my hometown to Kassel and I had to change trains twice, I had no other choice.

I arrived at the convention center just before 11 a.m.

I had actually planned to attend the lecture by Martin Steyer, DK7ZB „Portabelantennen mit 5,6-m- und 2,5-m-Teleskopstrahlern“. I wanted to attend because I know his lectures are excellent. Unfortunately, the room was so crowded that I had no chance of getting a seat. At my age, however, I can’t stand for an hour, so with a heavy heart I had to skip this lecture.

Since my old computer took an unreasonably long time to boot up and was no longer compatible with Windows 11, I bought a new one. After installing all the necessary programs over the past few days, it was time to put the PC to the test in a contest. The CQ WPX SSB contest, which took place last weekend, was the perfect opportunity.

I had the low-band antennas available again for this contest. However, I felt that the conditions weren’t the best. This was most evident in the fact that I managed to make only a single QSO with North America.

Here are my results:

Band QSOs Pts WPX Pt/Q
1,8 10 18 7 1,8
3,5 12 20 8 1,7
7 20 46 18 2,3
14 30 38 27 1,3
21 21 45 21 2,1
28 22 66 18 3,0
Total 115 233 99 2,0

Score : 23.067

Here is the map showing the QSOs made, as usual:

A nice bonus of this contest was that I managed to work a new ATNO with S09S across all modes. I hadn’t worked Western Sahara in all those years.

The map was created with https://qsomap.cqgma.org/ADIF_to_Karte.php and the text was translated with Deepl. DeepL translates the text much better than I could, even though I like to think I have a pretty good command of English.

At the beginning of the year, the two 160-meter contests take place. The CW Contest is always held on the last weekend in January, and the SSB Contest on the last weekend in February.I took part in both of them.

CQ 160-meter CW contest.

In the meantime, I have put up a long-wire antenna for the lower bands again. However, I am not yet satisfied with the results of this antenna. Something still needs to be done.

Here is the result:

Band QSOs Pts StP DXCC
1,8 115 509 0 26

Score : 13.234

As usual, here is the map showing the distribution of QSOs. It is noticeable that there are almost no connections in the southwestern direction. I can only speculate as to why this is the case. I believe that the gap has arisen because the house is located in that direction.

CQ 160-meter SSB contest.

I also took part in the 160-meter SSB contest. I tried to optimize the antenna once again, but with only moderate success. I set up another small auxiliary mast and ran the antenna over it. Unfortunately, this did not yield as much as I had hoped.

Here is the result:

Band QSOs Pts StP DXCC
1,8 33 129 0 14

Score : 1806

Here again is the map showing the QSOs made. Just like in the CW section, there is a gap in the distribution of countries. It is in the same place as in the CW section.

So, the year 2025 is history. Let´s make some statistics:

In the year 2025 i made 1943 QSO on shortwave and VHF / UHF from my home QTH. So about 150 QSO less than 2024.

Band Number of QSO´s DXCC

160 126 25

80 129 28

60 83 38

40 85 25

30 29 18

20 279 61

17 16 14

15 305 47

12 135 65

10 350 74

6 269 47

4 10 7

2 66 7

0,7 56 5

0,23 6 1

Distribution of modes over all bands:

CW 693 (65 DXCC)

SSB 359 (60 DXCC)

FM 0 (Several QSO on our club Frequenzy but not in any log)

FT4 3

FT8 618 (107 DXCC in Data. I guess most are in FT8)

RTTY 270

SSTV 0

DSTAR 0

According to my Clublog statistics i worked 122 different DXCC Entities

Since the beginning of spring, I had been unable to work on the lower bands because my long-wire antenna had broken and fallen down. However, because the trees already had leaves, I was unable to set up a new antenna. I was only able to do so again in the fall after the leaves had fallen. I am still not happy with the height of the antenna and will have to readjust it again.

In the meantime i played a little bit and made a QSO map of alls QSO i took in 2025:

The CQ WW CW contest took place last weekend. Since this is one of my favorite contests, I naturally took part. I chose “Classic” as my participant class. Classic means that you can only participate for 24 hours of the maximum 48 hours and the use of any aids (internet clusters, etc.) is prohibited. My output power was 100 watts.

Here are my results:

Band QSOs Pts ZN Cty

Total 200 299 43 103

Claimed Score : 43.654

I heard from various sources that conditions were so good in the contest. I can’t really confirm that. Not a single QSO with South America, hardly any with Southeast Asia, no QSOs with JA or VK. QSOs with the Midwest are also missing this year. So I didn’t find the conditions to be that good.

It’s always fun to take part in this contest, even though my 100 watts of output power is no match for the high-power stations. My very first QSO in the contest was with a station in Australia on 10 meters.

In the meantime, I have also built a new antenna for 40 and 80 meters after the old antenna fell down in the spring and I was unable to transmit on these bands for the entire year. However, there is still room for improvement here. It works quite well on 80 meters, but there are still significant deficits on 40 meters. This is also noticeable in the results:

Band Q/QTC QSOs Pts Mlt
3,5 QSO 29 29 52
7 QSO 4 4 12
14 QSO 14 1 4 22
21 QSO 22 22 34
21 RQTC 10 10 0
28 QSO 21 21 30
28 RQTC 10 10 0
Total All 110 110 150

Score : 16.500

As usual the QSO map:
